The Stolen Day
In American History there were many good things, bad things and things that we can just plain laugh at. The Story “The Stolen Day”, by Sherwood Anderson is not a story to laugh at about the main character who was probably Sherwood. He was probably trying to find a way to skip out of school. In the story the authors style, his plot line and his ability to write about himself in a comedic way were all key components in the story. Sherwood has a very normal style of writing. He is like all good writers where they can make you feel like you are actually there but one thing that he does do that makes him different from all other writers. He incorporates his whole family in this story. This is a hard thing to do but if you are good at it makes for a god story. Although he was the one who skipped school because he convinced himself that he actually had inflammatory rheumatism. The author did what many other people can’t do, laugh at themselves. Many people would feel embarrassed or feel mad but Sherwood seemed happy and relieved to write this story. He told how he skipped school and is now explaining his wrong. It may not be very obvious but he told his teacher that he was aching just because he wanted to get out of school and go fishing. It is good that he can look back at himself and write a short story on a time in his life that many people would try hard to forget. This story was written in the comedic mode of literature because it begins in a normal life. He is walking to school. The main character’s problem is that there is another boy Walter who gets out of school because he has a disease, but he can still go fishing and walk just fine. The main character realizes his problem when he walks by Walter in the morning on his way to school and he starts to ach. When he finally gets out to recess the pain is so bad that he starts to cry and is sent home by the teacher. Now his plan worked he got out of school and the rest of the day is his to do whatever he wants. It returns to normal after he brings the big fish home that he caught and they eat it for dinner. The main characters in stories can tell us what we might have to overcome in our lives. Believe what stories are telling you because you will not regret it. Stories can have very powerful messages all you have to do is identify the message and if you can follow the good ones you will have a good life.
